Arvo died in San Diego, California., February 5th, 1943. When he was 12 or 13 years of age, he fell from the well drilling rig that he had climbed up on at Johnny & Ida's. The guys had went in for coffee and Arvo climbed up the rig and fell. From the time of his fall until his death, he suffered epileptic seizures. When he was older he wanted to motor to Nebraska to visit me (Lembe) & Reynold. He got a car from Billy & Martha and drove to Nebraska. He wanted to go to California, but stopped at a store in Nevada, had a seizure, and fell down the steps. He was arrested for being drunk. He spent time in jail and was released once they realized he had had a siezure. He made it to California. He got sick and was hospitalized. Brother Gustie came to port (he was a Merchant Marine Sailor), got word that Arvo was sick, and went to see him. Gustie stayed with the Anderson girls. During his final visit to see Arvo, the nurse told Gustie that Arvo had died and it was the most beautiful death she had ever witnessed. Gustie made the arrangements for him and Arvo to return to Ashland by train. Arvo's body traveled in the freight car. The funeral director (Mr. Pasko), met them at the train station. At Arvo's funeral a sheer veil covered his open casket. (as told by Lembe to me) |
